A WNBA executive has strongly advised Angel Reese to ask for a trade from the Chicago Sky after a tumultuous season with the franchise. “She needs to get the hell out of there,” the executive told DallasHoopsJournal. “Chicago is probably the worst-run organization in the league. You’re gonna suspend your best player just because she’s putting pressure on you to get better? That was embarrassing to see.”
The executive’s frustration stems from Chicago’s inability to compete, with the team once again missing the playoffs this season and sitting among the bottom teams in the league. Reese, the seventh overall pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft from LSU, has been a standout player for the Sky, posting solid career averages of 14.1 points, 12.9 rebounds, 2.7 assists, 1.4 steals, and 0.6 blocks. However, the Sky are only 21-43 when Reese plays, and the team’s overall struggles have sparked concerns.
The 2024 WNBA rookie signed a four-year, $324,383 contract with the Sky, earning $82,399 in her second season, with a club option for $93,636 in 2027. Despite Reese’s strong individual performances, there’s growing tension between her and the team, especially following her recent comments about the Sky’s roster.
Reese’s Call for Change and Teammates’ Backlash
In an interview with the Chicago Tribune, Reese was candid about the team’s future, saying, “The Sky have to get good players,” and added that she could leave the franchise if things don’t improve. This open frustration has apparently not sat well with her teammates. According to Annie Costabile of Front Office Sports, multiple team members are upset with Reese’s public criticism of the roster, and a team meeting has been scheduled to address her comments directly.
“Multiple league sources told FOS the entire team has seen Reese’s comments and that teammates are unhappy with the direct attacks,” Costabile reported. “A team meeting is planned at which players are expected to address Reese directly.”
The issue is further complicated by Reese’s strong on-court abilities, which have been praised across the league. Her motor, rebounding, and defense have earned her recognition from executives and coaches. But as multiple league sources pointed out, her public airing of grievances could lead some franchises to weigh her talents against her conduct off the court.
Reese’s Stats and Future with the Sky
Currently, Reese is averaging 14.7 points and 12.6 rebounds per game, shooting 45.8% from the field, 18.2% from three-point range, and 75.6% from the free-throw line. Despite her impressive stats, the situation with Chicago is becoming increasingly difficult, and with the team unlikely to turn things around in the near future, Reese may indeed be on the move.
It’s clear that the Chicago Sky are facing a tough road ahead, and the future of their young star, Angel Reese, may soon be elsewhere if the team doesn’t make significant changes.
