Pau Gasol Says Carmelo Anthony Achieved Something Even Bigger Than an NBA Championship

For years, the biggest “what if” surrounding Carmelo Anthony’s career has been the missing championship ring. Despite 10 All-Star nods, six All-NBA selections, and a scoring title, Melo never made it to the NBA Finals—his deepest run came in 2009 with the Denver Nuggets in the Western Conference Finals.

That gap in his résumé often lands him in the “best players without a ring” conversations alongside Chris PaulCharles BarkleyKarl Malone, and James Harden. But according to Pau Gasol, that narrative sells Carmelo Anthony short.

The two-time Lakers champion recently defended Anthony’s legacy, pointing to something he believes is just as important—maybe even more important—than an NBA title: his incredible run with Team USA.

“Winning a championship, there are so many factors that have to come together,” Gasol explained. “There are a lot of all-time greats who haven’t won a championship. I don’t think that’s something that should define you.”

Instead, Gasol highlighted Melo’s international dominance. Anthony collected three Olympic gold medals with Team USA, becoming one of the program’s most reliable and decorated players ever. “His commitment to the USA basketball team is something I value a lot,” Gasol said. “How he performed and came through in all those championships for his team and his country—that to me is just as important or even more than winning an NBA championship.”

Gasol also praised Anthony’s overall impact on the game, both on and off the court, reminding fans that a legacy isn’t built solely on rings. “It’s everything that you’ve given and performed and contributed to the game. Melo is one of those players who has done so much on the basketball court and off the basketball court as well,” Gasol said.

Even without a Finals appearance, Anthony proved year after year that he was one of the NBA’s most dangerous scorers, and he showed a willingness to adapt his game to help his teams. His Hall of Fame credentials are already secure, and jersey retirements are likely on the way.

So while the “ring debate” will always follow him, Carmelo Anthony’s legacy—especially with Team USA—shows he left behind something even greater than hardware.

And if Pau Gasol is right, maybe it’s time fans stop measuring Melo’s greatness by what he didn’t win, and start appreciating everything he actually did.
